Support Team Game History
Ryan J. Hulbert, Ph. D.

In 2008 a new board game, entitled “The Support Team Game” was produced in a joint effort by the Idaho Department of Juvenile Corrections, the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, and the Idaho Federation of Families. It was exciting to watch the progress from an idea, to a homemade prototype, to a finished product!

The origin of the game was a desire I had to help teenagers have an interesting and fun way to see the benefit of developing a group of support team members for themselves in their home communities. I strongly believe that healthy peers and adult mentors are essential for teenagers to become happy and successful adults. Another key part of the background of the game are the Search Institute’s 40 Developmental Assets. I have long been a fan of the 40 Developmental Assets as research-based practical ideas to strengthen young people both internally and externally.

About a year before it was produced, I brain-stormed a board game combining the concepts of support team members and the developmental assets and tried it out on my own teenagers. They gave me good ideas for improvements and other early ideas came from other test-pilot youth at my job at the Idaho Department of Juvenile Corrections. A homemade version of the game was played by some youth at the Idaho System of Care Conference in Boise in May 2007, by members of the Idaho Juvenile Justice Children’s Mental Health work group, and a group of juvenile justice professionals from around the country at a workshop at the national Systems of Care Conference in New Orleans in August 2007. A lot of enthusiasm was shown for the game as a fun learning tool, and possible locations suggested for youth to play the game were juvenile detention centers, alternative schools, state juvenile correctional facilities, juvenile probation departments, juvenile drug courts, and church youth groups.

The momentum for the game becoming reality grew in the Fall of 2007 when the Search Institute granted formal permission to use the copyrighted Developmental Assets. Courtney Lester, Director of the Idaho Federation of Families obtained a grant from the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, and the social marketer for the Idaho Systems of Care, put her artistic talents to work on the final game board design. The finished game was demonstrated January 15, 2008 by Ross Edmunds, from the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare, in a workshop for judges and others involved in drug courts in Idaho.

The use of the game was largely dormant until I was invited by Dr. Virgil A. Wood to share it in a workshop in Houston, Texas in June 2015. With renewed enthusiasm for the game, it was reproduced by Chicago Game and Card in 2016.

One of Dr. Wood’s close associates, that Dr. Owen Cardwell, was instrumental in having 25 copies of the game be purchased by the District Attorney’s office in Richmond Virginia.

In 2018, I included the use of the game as part of a training to develop Everyday Hero's entitled Roots and Branches.
